Ábaco is arguably the most iconic independent bookstore and coffee shop in Cartagena, beloved by locals, tourists, and international authors alike. Situated on a historic corner in the walled city, its floor-to-ceiling brick arches and towering bookshelves create an unmatched intellectual atmosphere. It is a cultural landmark that requires the utmost architectural respect.

Project Overview

The Challenge:

Updating and optimizing the interior retail and seating spaces of an iconic cultural landmark without losing its famous “old-world” charm. The intervention required complex structural reinforcements and custom millwork within a highly restricted historic building.

The Smart Solution:

We deployed a surgical approach to the remodeling process. Custom-designed, high-quality wood modular shelving was integrated seamlessly with the ancient brickwork. We discreetly reinforced the structural integrity of the space and modernized the lighting to enhance both the book displays and the cafe ambiance.

The ROI:

The optimized layout allows for a higher volume of merchandise and increased cafe seating capacity. The meticulous restoration elevated the brand’s premium positioning, turning a simple bookstore into a must-visit destination that drives higher daily revenue.
